Chapter 11: Timber

Timber couldn’t sleep after they’d parted ways the day before. So she’d gotten out of bed and spent the night working on her Halloween sculpture for the year, the skeleton made of old wrenches. It was a haggard, gangly, creepy thing with only the essence of a face made from the ends of broken tools.

A knock on her garage door made her look up.

Scout entered the shop just a step. “Hey.”

“Don’t look at the light when I’m welding. It can damage your eyes,” Timber blurted as she finished the last seam. “I should’ve warned you yesterday.”

“Ah. I know. I did a little welding in school. More cutting with plasma torches, though.” Scout scanned the space, admiring her completed projects, some waiting for their chance in the shop out front, others ready for clients who just needed to pick them up.

“You can operate a torch?” she asked.

“I can use most tools, but that doesn’t mean it looks great when I’m done. I’m more of a wiring guy.”

Timber picked up the motor she’d chosen to make the skeleton’s jaw move. “Maybe you can help me mount and wire this then. Rory seems to think movement will help, but that’s a challenge I haven’t tackled yet. I just started to add internal lighting when it seems fitting.” Timber switched on the red LED lights, giving the skeleton a blood-tinted glow.

“Nice.” He walked over and assessed her motor and the moving parts. “Seems like a bit of overkill, but you definitely won’t burn up this motor moving this part.”

“Fine with me. Use any tools you need.” Timber watched as Scout affixed the motor mounts, connected the action arms and adjusted the movement of the jaw so it would open and close slowly. “Doubt you want anyone losing a finger in there, so we’ll leave a gap.”

“Cool. Thanks.”

In a few short minutes, he had finished the skeleton, and they stood back to watch it scream silently into the garage.

Timber wrinkled her nose.

“What?”

“Don’t tell me. I already know I need sound effects with this one.”

“I think it’s kind of neat silent. Makes you wonder what its saying.” Scout crossed his arms and nodded to himself. “Would be perfect in a haunted house or a haunted maze.”

“How about my front yard?”

“Your house is spooky. All black and gray?”

“I didn’t paint it. No one else wanted it, so it was cheap.” Timber leaned against her workbench as Scout took a long look at the pictures on the wall behind her.

“Divas?” he asked.

She glanced back at the photo from Lenora’s house and their Christmas party the year prior. “A few friends from high school formed an entrepreneurial group called the DIY Divas. We have weekly calls to check in, share advice, and tease one another.”

He straightened. “Huh. That’s—pretty awesome that you all still talk.”

“It has to be a choice.”

He smirked. “Like your all black outfit, black and orange bike, black house.” Scout glanced down at the tools on the floor. “Black welder.”

“It fits my mood most of the time,” she defended.
